Christopher Michael Benoit (IPA: [bə'nwɑ]) (May 21, 1967 – June 24, 2007) was a Canadian professional wrestler who, in 2007 received extensive media coverage as a result of being the perpetrator of a double-murder suicide in which he killed his wife and child, then himself, over the span of a weekend. In professional wrestling, he is best known for his work in Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and most notably, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Benoit, among other accolades, was a two-time World Heavyweight Champion and was generally regarded as one of the most popular, respected and technically gifted performers in the history of professional wrestling.[3][4][5][6][7]
Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their 7-year-old son Daniel were found dead in their Fayetteville, Georgia home on June 25, 2007. Authorities confirmed[8] that Benoit killed his wife and son, and subsequently hanged himself.[9] WWE officials had alerted police after Benoit missed several live appearances, including Vengeance: Night of Champions on June 24, 2007.[10] In late 2007, WWE executive Stephanie McMahon confirmed that Benoit, who was a performer on WWE's ECW brand at the time of his death, had been booked to win the ECW Championship at the event.[11]
